Chapter Eighteen

Thea parked the SUV in front of the library. Across the street in the park, the carnival was still going on.

God, it felt like years ago that she and Ryan and Wes had been walking around the park, riding all the rides, eating ice cream like a little family. That had been one of the best days she’d had all year. And then last night…

Desire clutched her heart, but she led Liv down the sidewalk as if she could outrun it. “What do you want to do?” she asked Olivia, tearing her mind off Wes.

“I don’t know.” Liv looked around.” What’s that?” She pointed to the green space next to the park where a bunch of blue-and-white tents stood.

“That, my dear, is a good old-fashioned craft fair.” It had been ages since she’d walked around a little pop-up market where artisans sold their handmade goods. “They usually have all kinds of unique things for sale. We can go look around if you want.”

“Sure.” Her daughter unclicked her seat belt, and they climbed out of the car. “This is actually a pretty cool town,” Liv said as they walked across the street.

“I’m sorry, what?” Thea pretended to be shocked by the statement. “I seem to remember you telling me how boring this trip would be a few weeks before we left.” That was before her daughter had met Preston, however.

“I’m not saying I’d want to live here or anything.” Olivia rolled her eyes, but it was in a good-natured way. “I’m just saying…it’s kind of nice to be in a small town where everyone’s friendly and they all hang out together at festivals like this.”

They entered the park, and Thea knew exactly what Liv was talking about. People stood around the tents chatting like they had all day to be friendly. There seemed to be no rushing and hurrying. Just simple enjoyment that made her want to join in. “Oh, look over there.” She pointed to a small red canopy tent selling homemade soaps.

They wandered over, and she picked up a lavender bath bar, breathing in the calming scent. “Doesn’t that smell amazing?”

“I like this one better.” Her daughter selected a birthday-cake-shaped soap. “It smells like vanilla.”

“They’re all natural,” the girl sitting at the counter told them. “Made with only the best essential oils.”

“We’ll take the birthday cake.” Thea pulled out her purse, delighted with the girl’s happy smile.

“Wonderful! You’ll love it.” She took the money and packaged up the soap for them.

Liv eyed her as they walked away. “Who are you and what have you done with my mother?”

Thea had to laugh. Olivia was obliviously referring to the fact that Thea never ever under any circumstances made spontaneous purchases that weren’t included in her budget. As a single mom she was usually extra careful, but today…well, it wouldn’t hurt to buy her daughter a few treats. “It’s been forever since we’ve had a girls’ bonding day.” That was mainly her fault. She kept them on a busy schedule back home.
